I do have one nested project in my current project. I updated quicktime a couple weeks ago and editing was fine until now, so I don't know about it being a quicktime problem fully. I have also thought about all those possibilities that you've listed and my hard drive is getting pretty full but not in the red zone yet. It just stalls at 62% while loading the project.
